KIDSBRIDGE@Home – Week 1

Day 1
March 30: 5 SEL Games to Try

Anita recommends trying some of these fun games. She and her Diversity Doll friends especially like “Starfish and Tornadoes” and “Turtle Time!”

Anita knows you can’t go to the playground right now.  She hopes that you can imagine a time that you went, find a picture of a busy playground in a book OR use this photo of a playground to help you play “Turtle Time. Imagine the playground filled with kids.

Day 2
March 31: Gratitude Pick-Up Sticks

Juan told us that he is feeling grateful today for his grandfather, bedroom, pancakes, bike and cat, Scruffy. Why was he feeling this way? He played the Gratitude Game with pick-up sticks! If you don’t have pick-up sticks, use crayons or colored pencils, instead.

Day 3
April 1: The Feelings Song

Arco knows that paying attention to your body helps you know what you are feeling. He hopes you enjoy learning The Feelings Song. (This is an activity for an educator and class but is easily adapted for an adult and child to enjoy)

Arco thinks that children 9 years and up could write more verses for The Feelings Song using emotions like frustrated (e.g. “a little bit mad a little bit sad – I can’t do what I want to do even though I tried”), lonely, excited, silly, embarrassed or proud. Arco would love to hear your verses! Record yourself (or a puppet friend) singing them and have an adult help you post the video (#MyFeelingsSong) to your Facebook or Twitter account and tag Kidsbridge Tolerance Center!

Day 4
April 2: Kind, Not Kind, Helpful, Unhelpful

Iris was curious about what to do when her 4th-6th grade friends have a problem and asked “What is the best way to help?” Then she played this sorting game with some of her Diversity Doll friends and they learned about how to be helpful! If you can’t print out the sorting cards, read them on the screen, discuss and write the name of the superhero with the category that they would be in.

Day 5
April 3: Lava Lamp

While this is a great science experiment, Ruby likes it for the calming effects of watching the oil bubbles. If you don’t have Alkaseltzer, try this alternative recipe in a small vessel to save oil: 4/5 oil, 1/5 white vinegar (instead of water), 1 teaspoon of baking soda (all measures are approximate). Imagine your feelings are bubbling up….and then calming down, as you take deep belly-breaths.
